From the Introduction by Richard Sokoloski

Czartoryski's ability to delineate character, though at times uneven and not devoid of caricature (e.g., the figure of Khamianoff), show that he also possessed an understanding of the subtle workings of the human condition.  Often, a dramatic incident, a barely perceptible nuance in gaze or an unexpected turn of phrase, a piece of background information which will later be of relevance -- all appear abundantly in Czartoryski's method of characterisation.
