Faculty of Education (Teacher Education)

MESSAGE FROM THE DEAN

The Faculty of Education of the University of Ottawa, along with its commitment to the promotion, advancement and dissemination of knowledge in the field of education, is actively involved in the preservice and professional development of teachers. Personnel representative of Canada's two official linguistic communities are involved in the delivery, both in French and English, of programs at the baccalaureate, master's and doctoral levels along with professional development programs.

As a faculty of a university whose specific mission is to build bridges between the English and French cultures in Canada by promoting bilingualism, and to develop the French culture in Ontario – the Faculty has a responsibility to both English and French speaking communities. It strives to maintain close ties with these communities and promote their development through the academic work of faculty and students. In Ontario, this responsibility results in an obligation to promote the development of the Franco-Ontarian community in accordance with its particular aspirations and needs.

The Faculty assumes a leadership role in educational research and works to expand research in education in a variety of ways. This role is realized through publishing, teaching in both official languages, excelling in research in areas in which the Faculty offers programs, participating in the development of interdisciplinary centres and fields of research pertinent to the realization of its mission.

In an effort to respond to the emerging needs of a society on the move, the Faculty has integrated values stemming from the past, present and future. It has also strengthened relationships with its many partners, such as school boards, professional associations and the community. Because of this integration, the Faculty is able to enrich the scientific inquiry that gives meaning to the profession of teaching.

In addition to possessing unique access to the world of education, the Faculty wants to be an interdisciplinary crossroad where dialogue contributes to the enrichment of knowledge and to the conception of new initiatives. Those who study here can flourish in such an environment and thereby contribute to their future and the future of the intellectual community.

The Faculty of Education extends a warm welcome to you and looks forward to providing guidance and assistance.

Welcome to our – and your – Faculty.
