Faculty of Law (Droit Civil)

MESSAGE FROM THE DEAN

Welcome to the Civil Law Section of the University of Ottawa’s Faculty of Law.

For MORE THAN fifty years, the Civil Law Section has been preparing students to face the constantly shifting challenges of the legal profession. From this training come versatile legal professionals who have taken on careers of all kinds: lawyers, notaries, politicians, journalists, business leaders, professors, and advocates in national or international organizations.

First and foremost, the undergraduate program provides the knowledge and skills required by Quebec’s professional associations, that is, the Barreau du Québec and the Chambre des notaires du Québec. It also gives students access to a one-year program within the University of Ottawa’s Common Law Section that makes them eligible for the bar of other provinces and territories. What’s more, the Civil Law Section runs several programs, in both French and English, designed to enhance the knowledge of common-law practitioners seeking complementary training in civil law. In addition, the Section has added an innovative touch to its curriculum by introducing a cooperative-education stream in which students can sharpen their training thanks to two paid work terms during their LL.L program.

And to keep pace with the complex new demands placed on society as a whole, the Civil Law Section now offers joint programs to meet challenges in multiple areas: one is in law and business management (LL.L./MBA) and another is in law and international development and globalization (LL.L and honours baccalaureate with specialization in international development and globalization).

In its philosophy, the Civil Law Section strives to produce and impart knowledge on all aspects of civil law. One of its prime goals is to ensure that students are thoroughly prepared to assume a leadership role in Canadian society and abroad. To achieve this, it offers international exchanges, internships, a part-time certificate program, clinical programs, moot- court competitions, and a supportive, rewarding and intellectually challenging environment.

The Civil Law Section as has a strong research mission that is vital to the creation and expansion of legal knowledge in Canada and elsewhere. The expertise of professors from the Civil Law Section has benefited dozens of countries, and it continues to feed the wells of legal expertise around the world.
