Faculty of Law (Common Law)

MESSAGE FROM THE DEAN

Welcome to the Common Law Section of the University of Ottawa.

We are a large urban law school with a broad, deep and varied curriculum. Our particular areas of specialization include Environmental Law, Social Justice, International Law, Public Law, and Technology Law including Privacy and Intellectual Property Law. Our professors are nationally and internationally known scholars and committed classroom teachers.

As part of “Canada’s university”, Common Law welcomes the highest proportion of students from outside of the province of Ontario. We offer four joint degree programs, and numerous opportunities for foreign exchanges. Even first year students are allowed to choose their professors and elective courses. Upper year students may elect work study placements for academic credit within the public, international or technology sectors. There are three legal clinics where students may participate in real legal disputes.

There is no better place to study law than in the national capital. Parliament and the Supreme Court are situated within walking distance. Many international organizations are headquartered here.

Our law school reflects the complexities and rich diversity of Canada. I hope you will consider studying law at the University of Ottawa.
