RECOGNITION OF EXCELLENCE

Governor General's Medal

Medal awarded by Her Excellency the Governor General of Canada to the student who has obtained the highest standing in a program of studies leading to a four-year baccalaureate degree. The student must have accumulated at least 60 credits at the University of Ottawa. This medal is awarded at spring convocation.

University Medals

The University Gold Medal for the highest standing in engineering.

The University Silver Medal for the second-highest standing in engineering.

The University plaque for the highest standing in chemical engineering, offered by the Faculty of Engineering.

The University plaque for the highest standing in civil engineering, offered by the Faculty of Engineering.

PRIZES, MEDALS AND SCHOLARSHIPS OFFERED BY THE FACULTY

Adventures in Engineering and Science Scholarship*, offered to a student registered in a regular or co-op program who has taken an active leadership role in the Adventures in Engineering and Science Camps. Student must be an Ontario resident and demonstrate financial need (awarded in November).

American Society of Materials International ScholarshipA scholarship of $100 awarded to the student in mechanical engineering who receives the highest marks in the two core material courses. The prize is donated by the Ottawa Valley Chapter (awarded in October).

Accenture Scholarship*A scholarship of $1,000 will alternate year to year between students in administration and computer science. The scholarship will be awarded to one student on the basis of the candidate's academic achievement and extracurricular activities (awarded in February).

Association of Professors of the University of Ottawa Scholarships*Approximately 60 non-renewable scholarships of $500 each awarded to deserving full-time students at the University of Ottawa in financial need (awarded in November).

The Bell/Senator Educational Bursary*Offered to a student registered in the second year of a program in engineering or science, and who obtained the highest grades during the last session of first year. Student must be an Ontario resident and demonstrate financial need (awarded in July).

The Bowater Pulp and Paper Canada Award for Mechanical Engineering Design*A value of $3,000 offered to students in mechanical engineering who take part in design competitions and projects. The award is shared equally among team members (awarded in May).

The J.P. Bickell Foundation ScholarshipA scholarship of $1,000 is awarded to a top-ranking fourth-year chemical or civil engineering student; the student must be registered in one or more mining related courses (awarded in November).

Wilfrid Brisson Memorial Scholarship*Three scholarships of $1,500 awarded to a student registered full-time in second, third or fourth year of an undergraduate program in the Department of Chemical Engineering with good academic standing, involved in student affairs and/or professional associations. Student must be an Ontario resident and demonstrate financial need (awarded in November).

CSChE Ottawa 1993 Chemical Engineering Scholarships*Two scholarships of $400 offered to a student entering in third year with a minimum GPA of 7.5 for each of their last two study terms. The students must supply a one-page document detailing community involvement (awarded in November).

The Canadian Engineering Memorial Foundation Scholarships*One scholarship of $5,000 awarded to a female student entering her first year and one scholarship of $5,000 awarded to a female student entering her final year at the Faculty of Engineering. The scholarships are offered across Canada (awarded in January).

The Canadian Society of Chemical Industry Silver MedalA cheque of $50 and a certificate for the highest standing in third-year chemical engineering.

Chemical Engineering Professors ScholarshipsTwo non-renewable scholarships of $150 each are awarded annually to second-year students registered in chemical engineering, based on marks obtained in first year.

One non-renewable scholarship of $150 (the Frank Giacobbi award) awarded annually to a third-year student registered in chemical engineering. The scholarship is awarded on the basis of marks obtained in second year.

The CGI Ottawa Award for Excellence*Award of $3,000 offered to a fourth-year student registered full-time who demonstrates academic excellence and leadership in extra-curricular activities (awarded in December).

The Cognos Scholarship*Nine scholarships of $2,000 each, awarded to students registered full-time in second year of the co-op program in computer science or software engineering. Must have completed the first year with a minimum CGPA of 8.0 and be involved in extra-curricular activities (awarded in November).

Consulting Engineers of Ontario Scholarship*One scholarship of $500 awarded to an outstanding student in third year of engineering who has demonstrated leadership ability, involvement in extra-curricular activities within the University or the community and who needs financial assistance (awarded in November).

Dean's Georganas and Patry Scholarship Fund*Awarded to a student registered full-time in the Faculty of Engineering who has completed first year with a minimum GPA of 6.0. Student must be an Ontario resident and demonstrate financial need (awarded in November).

The DMR Group Inc. Prize*A prize of $2,500 is awarded to a student registered in the co-op program IMS option. The student must be available to take part in two work terms with the company (awarded in March).

Droste-Kennedy Scholarship for Environmental Engineering*Awarded to a student registered full-time in civil engineering, environmental engineering option with a minimum GPA of 6.0. Student must be an Ontario resident and demonstrate financial need (awarded in November).

Dy 4 Systems Award*Two scholarship of $1,000 each. One scholarship awarded to a female candidate active in one varsity sport, registered in second, third or fourth year at the Faculty of Engineering with a minimum GPA of 7.0 and active in community service. One scholarship for a student who takes parts in competition and project. (awarded in February)

The Earl Dudgeon Memorial Scholarship*Awarded to a student registered full-time in mechanical engineering who has completed three years of the regular program with a minimum GPA of 7.0 in the last session. Student must be an Ontario resident and demonstrate financial need. The candidate must be an active member or become a member of the Canadian Society for Mechanical Engineering (awarded in November).

Engineers' Wives Association Bursaries*Five non-renewable scholarships of $500 offered each year to students registered in third or fourth year in engineering and who are in financial need (awarded in February).

Faculty of Engineering Memorial ScholarshipsSix non-renewable scholarships of $2,000 each, are awarded annually to outstanding female students entering first year in engineering (awarded in August).

Faculty of Engineering Fund*Offered to a student registered full-time at the Faculty of Engineering who has achieved a cumulative grade point average of 6.0 or equivalent in the last session. Student must be an Ontario resident and demonstrate financial need (awarded in November).

Maryse E. Guenette ScholarshipA scholarship of $500 awarded to the top (CGPA) female student who has completed the third year of the undergraduate program in chemical engineering and who is registered for the fourth year of the program (awarded in September).

John Gleed JetForm Scholarship*A scholarship of $2,000 is offered to a student registered in first year in one of the following programs: computer engineering, software engineering or computer science. The candidates must demonstrate leadership skills and the pioneering spirit of Mr. John Gleed (must possess strong personal and work ethics (that is; maintain a volunteer or paying position during studies) strength of character and must be tenacious, practical, honest, consistent and focussed. Candidates must also exhibit integrity, be unpretentious and demonstrate their contributions towards others. Student must be an Ontario resident and demonstrate financial need (awarded in November).

The Kipling PrizeValued at $1,000, the prize is awarded annually to a graduating engineering student who has demonstrated leadership ability and service to the engineering profession and/or the university community. The prize is donated by Camp No. 12 (Ottawa) of the Ritual of the Calling of an Engineer. The recipient must be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident (awarded in March).

Joseph A. Legris Scholarship*Awarded to a student registered full-time in a program of the Faculty of Engineering, who has a satisfactory academic record. Student must be an Ontario resident and demonstrate financial need (awarded in November).

Lockheed Martin Canada ScholarshipA scholarship of $500 awarded to a meritorious student completing third year in electrical engineering (awarded in May).

J.V. Marsh and S.G.S. Shiva ScholarshipsTwo non-renewable scholarships of $500 awarded annually to deserving students in an engineering program at the University of Ottawa. Applicants must have completed at least one full academic year with a good academic record (awarded in September).

McLimont Scholarship*One scholarship of $500 is awarded to a student registered full-time in chemical engineering. The student must be a graduate of an Ontario high school, be meritorious, that is, have completed at least two years of the program with a minimum GPA of 7.0 in the last session. The student must be Ontario resident and demonstrate financial need (awarded in November).

National Research Council of Canada Scholarship*A scholarship of $10,000 and summer employment with the NRC is awarded to an outstanding female student in the first year of the Faculty of Engineering. (awarded in March)

Andrew Moffitt Memorail Scholarship*Valued at $1,000, the scholarship is offered to a full-time student in first year electrical engineering or computer engineering. Student must demonstrate qualities that Andrew Moffitt possessed (love of life, consideration for others, interest in technology and sports) in a 500-word, autobiographical essay. Student must be an Ontario resident and demonstrate financial need (awarded in November).

Therese Tran Nguyen Scholarship*Awarded to a full-time student registered in civil engineering and achieving a minimum GPA of 8.0 in the last term. Student must be an Ontario resident and demonstrate financial need (awarded in November).

Nortel Founding Scholarship for the School of Information Technology and Engineering*Two Scholarship of 2,500$ each, is offered to a student registered in a first year at the School of Information Technology and Engineering with a minimum average of 80% in each entry level subject required by the SITE. The student must be a well-rounded individual, demonstrate an aptitude in computer skills and intention to enter into a co-op program at the School of Information Technology and Engineering. The student must be an Ontario resident and demonstrate financial need (awarded in November).

Novytech Contracting Scholarship*Awarded to a full-time student registered in a civil engineering program. Student must be an Ontario resident and demonstrate financial need (awarded in November).

Ontario Power Generation Scholarship*A scholarship of $2,400 awarded annually to a member of employment equity target group (woman, aboriginal, disabled, visible minority) who has demonstrated leadership ability, strong oral and written communication skills and involvement in extra-curricular activities. The award is offered to a student in second year who does not hold another scholarship and who is eligible to work in Canada upon completion of the degree (awarded in July).

Ottawa Hydro and Carl F. Kropp Recognition of Academic Excellence*One scholarship of $2,000 is offered annually to a student registered in electrical engineering who has attended an Ottawa high school. The recipient must demonstrate financial need (awarded in August).

Ottawa Citizen Scholarship in Technical Studies*A scholarship of $1,500 is awarded to a full-time student who has an 80% average in first year. The recipient must be from eastern Ontario or west Quebec and demonstrate an interest in a high-tech career. Priority will be given to students who demonstrate financial need (awarded in November).

Ottawa Section of the Petroleum Society of CIM ScholarshipValued at $500, the scholarship is awarded annually when merited, on the recommendation of either the Dean of the Faculty of Science or Dean of the Faculty of Engineering to a Canadian citizen or permanent resident proceeding to the second or third year of a degree program in science or engineering. The award will alternate year to year between students in science or engineering provided qualified applicants are presented to the awards committee by the chairman of each faculty selection committee. Preference will be given to a student who has demonstrated an interest in the petroleum industry (awarded in November).

Professional Engineers of Ontario Scholarships*Two non-renewable scholarships of $1,200 awarded annually to the top male student and to the top female student from OAC admitted in first year of engineering (awarded in August).

Two scholarships of $600 awarded to students who achieve the highest standing in the third year of their program (awarded in November).

Two scholarships of $600 awarded annually to deserving students in an engineering program at the University of Ottawa. Applicants must have exhibited exceptional role model qualities in extra-curricular activities (awarded in November).

The Professional Engineering of Ontario Gold MedalOffered for highest standing in engineering. A cheque of $100 accompanies the medal.

The SHL Systemhouse President's Award for Education and TechnologyValued at $5,000, this non-renewable scholarship will be awarded to a computer science or engineering student entering the final year of an honour's program. The award is designed to promote and encourage excellence in technology, a commitment to learning, community service and leadership.

The UAP Work Term and ScholarshipA scholarship of $1,000 and a four-month work term are awarded (in January) to an honours student in third year with a minimum CGPA of 8.0. The student must be available to take part in a summer work term.

Dean's honour list

Students of the faculty who have accumulated at least 24 credits during the two previous and consecutive sessions, or while registered in a co-op option during the fall or winter sessions and have accumulated at least 12 credits during each of the study sessions in their program during the previous 12 months, will have their name inscribed on the dean's honour list, provided their grade point average is 8.5 or more, without any failures for the previous 12 months. The list is established in May.

Each year, students registered part-time and who are receiving their degree at the preceeding spring or fall convocation and who have maintained a cumulative grade point average (CGA) of 8.5 or more will have their name inscribed on the dean's honour list.

Citations

The citation for a degree will be determined by the grade point average computed and is calculated as follows: BASc and BSc honours: all 3000 and higher level courses BSc with concentration: all 2000 and higher level courses

Students who have failed more than three full courses or the equivalent in the levels counting towards the citation shall not be entitled to a citation, regardless of the mark obtained in the supplemental examinations or in the repetition of the courses.

When degrees are awarded, the following citations are indicated according to the CGPA calculated from 3000-level courses and higher: Summa cum laude: 9.0 and above Magna cum laude: from 8.0 to 8.9 Cum laude: from 7.0 to 7.9

ADMISSION SCHOLARSHIPS

Minimal eligibility criteria:

Canadian citizenship or permanent residency;

Ontario secondary school diploma including six Ontario academic courses or the equivalent;

First, full-time registration in an undergraduate program.

NOTE: For the purposes of the present document, threshold faculties are defined as follows: Administration, Arts, Engineering, Health Sciences, Science, and Social Sciences.

Rector's Scholarship

Number: six (one per threshold faculty)

Amount: $30,000 (7,500 per year)

Renewable: yes (for a maximum of three years)

Fields of Study: programs offered by the threshold faculties

Eligibility criteria: bilingualism (candidates must write an 800-word text, half in French and half in English); minimum admission average of 92%; leadership ability and involvement in extra-curricular activities; recommendation from director from school of CEGEP.

Renewal criteria: minimum cumulative grade point average of 9.0; full-time registration in one of the threshold faculties.

Application required: yes (application forms are available at the admissions section and at the awards office)

Deadline: April 15

Note: This scholarship replaces the Renewable Admission Scholarship or the Nortel Networks Admission Scholarship at the University of Ottawa.

Chancellor's Scholarship

Number: six (one per threshold faculty)

Amount: $26,000 (6,500 per year)

Renewable: yes (for a maximum of three years)

Fields of Study: programs offered by the threshold faculties

Eligibility criteria: bilingualism (candidates must write an 800-word text on a current event); minimum admission average of 92%; leadership ability and involvement in extra-curricular activities; recommendation from director of school or CEGEP; satisfy minimal eligibility criteria.

Renewal criteria: minimum cumulative grade point average of 9.0; full-time registration in one of the threshold faculties.

Application required: yes (application forms are available at the admissions section and at the awards office)

Deadline: April 15

Note: This scholarship replaces the Renewable Admission Scholarship or the Nortel Networks Admission Scholarship at the University of Ottawa.

Renewable Admission Scholarship

Number: varies

Amount: $500 to $3,500 (depending on admission average)

Renewable: yes (for a maximum of three years, for the same amount as at the time of admission)

Fields of Study: any field of study level offered by a threshold faculty or by the Faculty of Law, Civil Law Section

Admission Scholarship for Women in Civil Engineering

Amount: $1,000 (minimum)

Eligibility criteria: female student; first, full-time admission to an under- graduate program in civil engineering; minimum admission average of 80%.

Bourse des leaders de la francophonie canadienne

Number: 100

Amount: $2,000, plus: a renewable admission scholarship (between $2,000 and $3,500, depending on the admission average, in a threshold faculty or in the Faculty of Law, Civil Law Section); a guaranteed place in residence.

Renewable: no

Fields of Study: any field of study level offered by a threshold faculty or by the Faculty of Law, Civil Law Section

Eligibility criteria: Francophone; minimum admission average of 85%; demonstrate leadership through an important contribution made in the community or at school; write a 200-word text in French supporting the application and describing the community involvement.

MERIT SCHOLARSHIPS
