Environmental Studies

Sustainable development thrives only when society lives in harmony with its environment. To fully understand not only how human activity affects the environment but also how complex the environmental stakes of human activity are, we have to use an interdisciplinary approach involving the humanities, the natural sciences and the social sciences.

The BA with a concentration in environmental studies joins three specific domains: geography, biology and economics. In terms of Faculty of Arts requirements, eight courses are obligatory and five courses can be selected from a pre-established list. To meet program bilingual obligations, at least three courses specifically related to the program must be taken in the student’s second official language (English or French). The program should be considered by students interest in a joint or double specialization.

Our bilingual honours BA in environmental studies gives students a full-scale appreciation of how society and the environment relate. The program involves a core of compulsory courses in 11 disciplines and a series of electives covering 15 disciplines. Thanks to its bilingual character (students can take at least eight sessional courses in their second official language), the program gives access to a richer pool of university resources, to the contrasting perspectives of Canada’s two principal cultures, and to the national capital’s bilingual job market.

To ease a student’s transition into the workplace, the program has a co-op option and also emphasizes field experiences and practical applications. Ultimately, the program leads to work in resource planning and development, environmental-impact studies, pollution control and tourism.

The objective of the program is to prepare versatile students with the following skills:

1.a broad preparation and holistic appreciation based in the humanities regarding society-environment relationships;

2. effective oral and written communication skills;

3. a mastery of research methods and management principles;

4. further training in one of three profiles: methodology, natural environment, or environment
and public policy;

5. applied research and field experience;

6. ability to enter the job market and adapt to a variety of tasks involving the environment;

7. ability to pursue graduate studies in environmental studies or related fields; and

8. ability to work and study in both official languages.

Honours BA in Environmental Studies (Bilingual) - Co-operative Education Option

The co-op option involves the same courses and requirements as the honours program in environmental studies. Study terms alternate with work terms. The following table presents the program requirements per term starting at the beginning of third year.

To be eligible, students must meet the following conditions:

1. Registration in the honours BA in environmental studies

2. Minimum cumulative grade point average of 6.0 or a letter average of B since enrolment at the University of Ottawa

3. Completion of 60 credits in compulsory courses by the end of their second year

NOTE: All students entering first year at the University of Ottawa will be admissible to apply for direct admission to the co-op program, if they meet the following requirements:

1. Minimum admission average of 80 per cent

2. A bilingual diploma or successful completion of the University of Ottawa Language Proficienty Test, with at least 80 per cent, during the first month at the University.

In order to keep their reserved spot in co-op, students will have to maintain a CGPA of 8.0. At the time of the formal admission process in the fall semester preceding their first work term, students who did not maintain a CGPA of 8.0 will lose their reserved spot. They will be admissible if they meet the minimum grade point average for second year admission. However, they will have to compete with all other applicants.
