Professor's notes

Please note that the professor's notes are in the language of the lecture.

John has chills, a headache and muscle pains. Last time he was ill, it took several days to get an appointment with his physician, so this time he tries another approach to get a doctor's opinion. He fires up a web browser on his computer and "googles" his symptoms. In no time, he discovers that his symptoms are associated with Lyme disease, a tension headache, the flu, aseptic meningitis—and pregnancy. The ability to acquire needed information at our fingertips is one of the defining characteristics of our information society. But for people like John, it represents a very dangerous opportunity.

This talk is about health informatics—a new discipline that aims to harness information and computing technologies to improve healthcare delivery. Using a number of examples, we will explain how health informatics methods can be used to develop mobile decision support solutions for healthcare professionals and patients. We will look into the opportunities that these technologies bring and will reflect on the role they can play in future healthcare delivery. We will also identify possible unintended consequences caused by the pervasive presence of these technologies. To conclude, we will come back to John's decision dilemma and let the audience decide if "Dr. Google" makes a good physician.
