Step 1. Know what to do in emergencies
The University of Ottawa has taken all necessary measures to ensure that students, staff and external agencies know how to proceed in the event of an on-campus emergency. Protection Services is ready and waiting to delegate duties and to coordinate support from internal resources and local authorities, ensuring the best possible outcome for everyone involved.
The best way to protect yourself is to know how to respond during an emergency BEFORE it happens. Make sure you’re prepared for emergencies and know what actions to take when uOttawa authorities direct you to:
A lockdown involves a series of measures that are intended to minimize risk to students and staff until civil authorities are able to take control of the situation. If a violent aggressor is in the vicinity, you should leave the area as soon as safely possible. If safe escape isn’t an option, you’ll need to take cover or hide until authorities let you know it’s safe to come out.
Shelter-in-place requires that you take refuge by remaining inside the building you’re in when the emergency occurs. If you’re outside when the emergency takes place, seek shelter from the hazard by entering the nearest building.
