Michel Prévost

I feel very privileged to be part of a team that plays the role of custodian of University of Ottawa's heritage [...]

A passion for promoting our heritage

When most of us think of archives, we think of dusty old papers, don't we? Well, think again! Michel Prévost, chief archivist at the University, sees archives as the living memory of every community. And he sees them all around us…photos, medals, maps,  dishware, works of art, films, digital documents and, yes, even paper documents. They all speak to us about the lives and events of times gone by.

After 25 years at the University of Ottawa archives, 20 of those as chief archivist, Michel Prévost remains passionate about his work…and loves to talk to others about it. "I feel very privileged to be part of a team that plays the role of custodian of University of Ottawa's heritage and the collective memories of the institution," he said.

But it isn't just about preserving the treasures of the past; it's also about making sure they get shared. Far from lying low in the basement of 100 Marie-Curie where Archives is located, this archivist can be found out and about discussing what makes him tick - the history - no matter how significant - of the University and the region.

And he seizes every opportunity he can to share his passion for the past! He can be found giving guided tours, radio and television interviews, lectures and even tours of cemeteries! And let's not forget the Rideau Canal Festival, which the University and the chief archivist participated in for the first time last summer. "The University is truly lucky to be located so close to a World Heritage Site, and it is important to promote it."

Archives, dull? Never! Just talk to Michel Prévost!
