QUICK NEWS #12: 14 March 2011
12.1 – UPDATE ON NEGOTIATIONS
Our negotiations have now entered the conciliation stage. A conciliator
appointed by the Ontario Labour Relations Board has presided over two full-day
bargaining sessions, on February 2 and March 5; the next is March 16. The
only issue that the Employer has agreed to discuss so far is the “Exclusion
clause” (Article 2.1.3.e) whereby the Employer threatened to strip professors
teaching non-credit courses in PDP/Education and in OLBI (Official Language
and Bilingualism Institute) of their APTPUO union membership, salaries and
benefits. We’re preparing for an arduous fight and pushing to negotiate a
fair deal for all of our members.
12.2 – ONLINE APPLICATIONS FOR COURSE CONTRACTS
University regulations now require that applications in response to course
postings be submitted online using the UO "Part-Time Academic Positions" website
-- not paper, fax, email, etc. Be sure you change the “session” setting to
the semester you are interested in, otherwise you may see a message saying
“there are no positions available at this time.” Click the course that you
want, then click “Apply to Posting.” Don’t leave it to the last minute --
filling out this online form takes a lot of time the first time you do it
because you have to type in your entire… life history! To see the course postings,
and to apply, go to:
https://web30.uottawa.ca/v3/uohmsweb/aptpuo.aspx
(Please report any changes to the course posting's “minimum requirements,”
etc., to aptpuo@uottawa.ca)
12.3 – APTPUO STUDENT BURSARY RECIPIENTS
We congratulate the recipients of the 2011 APTPUO 500$ Student Bursaries:
Ms. Qudsia Amel (4th year, School of Nursing); Ms. Michelle Ben (4th year,
Department of Economics); Mr. Paul Bitar (3rd year, Department of Electrical
Engineering); Mr. Marc Dagher (3rd year, Faculty of Science); Mr. Mehdi El
Ouedghiri-el Idrissi (4th year, Telfer School of Management); Ms. Candyce
Yue Sun (4th year, Faculty of Science) and Mr. Vahit Yucesoy (3rd year, International
Development and Global Studies).

QUICK NEWS #11: 15 February 2011
11.1 – HIRING REPORTS
Please look on the bulletin boards in your Department to see if the HIRING
REPORT for courses given to APTPUO professors has been posted. Each Department
is required to do this, so that everyone can check who got what courses, their
category and seniority points. If the Hiring Report is not posted, please
tell your Department Administrator AND TELL US!
11.2 – UNIVERSITY JOINT COMMITTEES
We are now accepting applications from our members to sit on what are called
“UNIVERSITY JOINT COMMITTEES.” As far as we can tell, there are vacancies
on the following committees: Pension; Food Services; and Academic and Professional
Development Fund. Please send us a short resumé and explain if and
why you have an interest or suitability for a particular committee. Please
also state the following: “I realize that my role on the Committee is to represent
the interest of APTPUO professors in consultation with the Board of Directors
of the APTPUO, and I will submit a brief report of each meeting I attend,
along with copies documents distributed at the committee meeting.” For each
written report of a committee meeting that you attended, you will receive
an honorarium of $60. (The Academic and Professional Development Fund Committee
is more complicated and has its own set of obligations and rewards!) We will
also be calling for applications for the newly revised Health and Safety
Committee, once the proposed structure receives approval from the Ministry
of Labour.
11.3 – NEW OFFICE ADMINISTRATOR
The APTPUO has a NEW OFFICE ADMINISTRATOR, Isabelle Dault, whom we welcome
to our team. Our office, located in room 124 of the Unicentre, will now be
open Monday to Friday, 9 to 5, except when Isabelle is assisting us in meetings
outside our premises. You are welcome to drop by, or phone in advance: 613-562-5800,
ext. 4375.

QUICK NEWS #10: 17 January 2011
10.1 - HAPPY NEW YEAR!
We wish you the best in your classes during 2011, but we haven’t forgotten
about you even if you do not have a course right now! This year we are launching
a renewed campaign to contact all our members and to update your non-UO email
address, your home mailing address and phone numbers. This is urgent because
the University could cut off our LISTSERV as a pressure tactic during contract
negotiations. Please press “REPLY” and send us your info!
10.2 - TELL US ABOUT YOUR COMMITTEE
Each year the APTPUO nominates representatives to “joint” University committees,
which range from health and safety, and harassment, to food services and parking.
We would like to hear from those of you who have held these positions during
the last year. How many times has your committee met? What were the major
issues/decisions? Are you interested in continuing with this assignment? Please
reply as soon as possible so we can get on to the next stage: calling for
applications to fill all the committee seats. More on that later.
10.3 - PART-TIME PROFESSOR OF THE YEAR AWARD
Just another reminder to get your dossier together! While the deadline has
not yet been announced, it will be during the winter semester, so have a look
at the rules and enter the contest!
More info at:

QUICK NEWS #9: 23 November 2010
9.1 - CHANGE OF LOCATION FOR AGM
We are back in “Jazzy”! Instead of the New Residence Building, our AGM will
again be held in the JAZZY RESTAURANT in the UNICENTRE (adjacent to the Cafeteria).
Buffet dinner and meeting, starting at 5:30pm, this Friday, November 26th.
9.2 - DON’T MISS OUR AGM!
We are in the midst of collective bargaining right now, and the University
needs to see that we are strong and united. There are some urgent issues (see
below) that may ultimately lead to a strike vote. Please contact your colleagues
and get them to attend.
9.3 - SHORTER WINTER SEMESTER
We learned recently that there will only be twelve weeks of class in the
winter semester, to match the arrangements brought about by the new autumn
study break. The University is expecting professors to teach the traditional
thirteen weeks of course material in twelve weeks. The pay structure is unchanged
for the moment, but the University is asking for concessions at the bargaining
table due to the reduction in classroom time.
9.4 - UNILATERAL REMOVAL OF UNIONIZED STATUS FOR APTPUO PROFS IN OLBE
AND EDUCATION
The University has informed us that it will be removing unionized status
from APTPUO profs who are teaching all non-credit courses in the Faculty of
Education and OLBE. The University wants to hire whomever they wish (no APTPUO
seniority), with reduced wages and benefits. Please come to the Annual General
Meeting to hear more about the options facing our Union.
9.5 - ADVANCE ANNOUNCEMENT -- COMPETITION FOR PART-TIME PROFESSOR OF THE
YEAR AWARD
Deadline for submitting your application will be in mid-Winter. For general
information, please have a look at:
http://www.uottawa.ca/associations/aptpuo/awa.html

QUICK NEWS #5
5.1 - PAYMENTS FOR DFR EXAMS, ETC.
All APTPUO professors are entitled to additional remuneration for:
- preparing and marking a deferred exam ($150 - paragraph
5.2.2.1 of the current Collective Agreement);
- attending a committee/hearing in an academic fraud case
($175 - para. 5.2.4a);
- participating in an official grade appeal ($175 - para.
5.2.4b);
- and carrying out extra monitoring, etc. in the case of
a student "accommodation" request ($200 - para 5.2.4c).
Your department is supposed to process the payment automatically, but it
seems that in many cases they don't. Therefore: keep track of all cases you
handle under these clauses, and make sure you receive your payment. Send an
email to your Chair with the details, and cite the appropriate paragraph of
the Collective Agreement.
5.2 - If you have carried out any of the tasks referred to above, please
email us APTPUO@uottawa.ca to let us know whether or not your department made
the payment automatically.
If it did not, please send us a copy of the email you sent your department
requesting the payment, and also tell us how long it took to get the matter
resolved. To work effectively on your behalf, our Association needs facts!
And we need each APTPUO prof to supply us with the facts!
=================================================
QUICK NEWS #3: 22 March 2010
3.1 - BARGAINING FOR OUR NEXT COLLECTIVE AGREEMENT
is about to get underway, so in the near future we will be sending you a
“QUICK SURVEY” to get your ideas and opinions in order to establish priorities
for our Bargaining Committee. Our current collective agreement expires at
the end of August of this year, but its provisions remain in force after that
date.
3.2 - COURSE POSTINGS AND APPLICATION PROCEDURES WILL BE CHANGING
over the next few months. For the Spring and Summer 2010 sessions, postings
will be done in the same way as before (be sure to check department bulletin
boards), but eventually postings will only be available on line, and applications
will only be accepted on line.
3.3 - PLEASE SEND US YOUR PRIVATE EMAIL ADDRESS!
While everyone who is currently teaching is provided with a “@uottawa.ca”
email address, there seem to be gaps in the lists the University is supposed
to provide to the APTPUO. And if we ever had to send you information that
we didn’t want to go through the University system, we need an alternative,
private address for each of our members. Also, if you know of colleagues who
are not receiving these Quick-News mailings, please ask them to send us their
email addresses, at APTPUO@uottawa.ca.
=============================================
QUICK NEWS # 2
2.1 - CUTS TO PART-TIME POSITIONS
UO President Alan Rock will soon be consulting all the unions at the University
regarding the Report of the Steering Committee on Resource Optimization, which
calls for immediate cuts of almost one-and-a-half million dollars in part-time
positions. This would be a loss of approximately 200 part-time contracts.
The APTPUO is sending you a separate letter with more information about this
urgent matter, and we encourage you to send a letter of protest to the University.
The report can be found at:
http://www.president.uottawa.ca/documents/2010/resource-optimization-report.pdf
Your response should be sent to the address below. (Please c.c. to aptpuo@uottawa.ca):
http://www.president.uottawa.ca/box.html
2.2 - The APTPUO is making a $500 donation to aid in the HAITIAN RELIEF
EFFORTS.
Let’s not forget this crisis now that it has slipped out of the headlines.
2.3- Apply for the PART-TIME PROFESSOR OF THE YEAR award!
Time is running out!
If your students and Department think you’re great, you should apply for
the PART-TIME PROFESSOR OF THE YEAR award!
Don’t wait for somebody else to nominate you!
The prize is $2000, and it’s a fine item for your C.V.! Your application
must be handed in to you Chairperson by March 1st, but it will take you some
time to put your dossier together, so start now!
Info at:
http://www.uottawa.ca/associations/aptpuo/awa.html

QUICK NEWS #1
Hello Professors who teach Part-Time!
1.1 - Starting now, the APTPUO will be sending you a frequent “QUICK
NEWS” email.
It will keep you up-to-date on breaking issues; highlights of Board meeting
discussions; details about our Collective Agreement; invitations to events
and meetings; and more.
Too busy to read another email? That’s okay -- just skip it, but please
don’t unsubscribe because your Association needs a way to reach you if an
urgent situation arises.
To make it easy to “catch up,” each Quick News will also contain the announcements
from previous weeks, so you only need to read the latest email to know what
has been happening all along!
1.2 - HELP WANTED For Academic Development Fund COMMITTEE
This important UO-APTPUO committee reviews all the grant applications for
research, travel, etc. from professors who teach part-time.
The task includes reviewing many confidential application dossiers (homework!)
and meeting in the full committee to make decisions.
We need to choose someone with discretion, attention to detail, and consciousness
about meeting deadlines and attending meetings.
There is a small stipend available. If interested, please email us at APTPUO@uottawa.ca,
telling us about your background. The position is open until “the right” person
is found!
1.3 - The DEADLINE for applying for the PART-TIME PROFESSOR OF THE YEAR
award has been extended to MARCH 1.
