We’re two proud University of Ottawa alumnae who won the Ripostes debate tournament for the 2015–2016 school year. Taking part in the competition allowed us to develop public speaking skills, including formulating short and persuasive arguments and managing speaking time effectively.
As far as preparation goes, we spent most of our time researching and formulating the central thesis of our argument, which allowed us to figure out the antithesis and rebuttals that followed from it. We also practised each of our speeches with a stopwatch. Finally, by participating, we gained a deeper understanding of current issues, which allowed us to take a well-reasoned out position and have a forum to share it.
We strongly encourage students to take part in this tournament. Whether you’re a debater or a spectator, you’ll really enjoy yourself. And the prize is worth it, too! [Winners flew out to Paris!]
