The Charles W. MacLeod MD/PhD Fellowship

Charles W. MacLeod

Charles MacLeod was a man whose experiences took him many places over the course of his life, from his early years in rural Nova Scotia, to his internship in Canada’s capital at the Ottawa Civic Hospital, to his medical practice in Detroit during Motown’s heyday. He came from a large family and would spend his rare vacation time travelling all the way back to his hometown in Dunvegan on Cape Breton Island.

A member of the first-ever graduating class of uOttawa’s Faculty of Medicine in 1951, Dr. MacLeod spent a lifetime helping others. He was a pioneer in the highly specialized field of hand surgery and made history with the first hand re-attachment surgery in Detroit on an injured automotive factory worker in 1979. He and his team would continue to improve intricate hand reconstruction techniques, ultimately creating one of the best hand surgery centres in the world.

Despite his success and renown, he never forgot his roots and those who helped him along the way.

The Dr. Charles W. MacLeod MD/PhD Fellowship was created through a bequest and a gift of life insurance to the Faculty of Medicine, through Dr. MacLeod’s estate. The Fellowship ensures that this gift by a medical pioneer continues to help others by fostering the next generation of doctors and researchers. The Fellowship provides financial assistance to uOttawa PhD students working in the area of brain-related illnesses.
