What to do if you are ill and have flu-like symptoms

Flu-like symptoms include fever, chills, sore throat, headache, muscle aches and, in some cases, vomiting and diarrhea. Visit the City of Ottawa Public Health website for more information on H1N1 and on what you can do to manage your symptoms and help limit the spread of the virus.

Do stay home if you have a flu-like illness, and do not return to work until you are fever-free for more than 24 hours (without fever medication) and are feeling well enough to resume your regular activities.

If you are absent, you must inform your dean or department chair by phone or by e-mail as soon as possible after you start missing work.

As it is important for the University to determine how many employees are experiencing flu-like symptoms, you are encouraged to complete the Influenza Self-Declaration Form as soon as possible after your absence begins.

To ensure confidentiality, you can send the completed form yourself to the Occupational Disability and Leave Sector by fax at 613-562-5120 or by e-mail at santetr@uottawa.ca or by intra mail (Occupational Health and Leave, Tabaret Hall, Room 017).

HR's occupational health nurses may contact you to ensure you know about the resources provided by public health agencies, in case you experience complications related to your flu-like illness. You can reach the occupational health nurses at extension 3162 or 1474, or by e-mail at santetr@uottawa.ca.

If you have flu-like symptoms, you can contact Ontario Telehealth at 1-866-797-0000 (Ontario residents), the Ottawa Public Health Information Line at 613-580-6744 or the Info-Santé health hotline at 811 (Quebec residents) to talk with a registered nurse.

Flu assessment centres are open to provide care to individuals who have flu-like symptoms, but either do not have a family physician or cannot get an appointment with their own. Not every one suffering from flu-like symptoms needs to see a physician. Please consult the following websites:

What to do if you need to miss work to look after a family member who has a flu-like illness

If you must stay home to look after a sick child or a member of your immediate family, you must inform your dean or department chair before or as soon as possible after your absence begins. Please refer to article 29.3.1 (f) of the APUO collective agreement for the leaves you may be entitled to.

A vaccine is now available to targeted groups to protect against H1N1. Please consult the following websites for immunization dates and locations:

Ottawa residents and Outaouais residents and Eastern Ontario residents (Rockland, Embrun, Casselman, etc.).
