Is there a uOttawa student on your holiday shopping list? Here’s a bit of gift inspiration for you.
Yes, winter is coming, which means students will be walking from class to class and waiting for the bus in the freezing cold. Warming up is crucial, and what better way to do so than with a toasty mug of coffee or tea. However, coffee shop beverages can quickly become a very pricey habit. But did you know that many coffee shops also offer discounts to students who bring in their own mug? In fact, in addition to being environmentally friendly, a reusable mug is perfect for uOttawa students: on Muggy Mondays they can warm up with a free beverage when they bring in their own reusable mug!
Reusable Water Bottle
You may know that uOttawa has been a bottled-water-free campus since 2010. Although this is a great environmental initiative, it can sometimes leave students in a pinch when they need some hydration. A reusable water bottle is the perfect gift for any student since all water fountains on campus are also water bottle filling stations. With so many designs and options available on the market, you are sure to find something to match your student’s style!
Did you know that Flex Dollars can be used to buy food, photocopying services, laundry services, event tickets, books, and much more at over 70 locations on campus? If you know your student’s uOttawa student number, you can easily go on line to add flex dollars to their student card. It’s sure to be a much-appreciated gift for the upcoming semester.
A good pair of headphones
Studying: the activity that takes up a great amount of a university student’s time. Staying focused can be difficult in public areas or even in the library, so help your student concentrate (or enjoy some great downtime watching Netflix) with a nice pair of headphones! Students will tell you that they can never have too many pairs, considering a headphone’s strange ability to disappear or break down when needed most!
Warm clothes and accessories!
Everyone knows that the walk from Tabaret to SITE seems to take forever when temperatures are in the negatives. Let’s face it: Ottawa is a cold place during the winter, and there is nothing worse than sitting through a three-hour lecture when your whole body takes two hours to defrost. Hats, mittens, wool socks, and warm clothes are a must!
Who doesn’t love a good pampering session? This holiday season, many students on a tight budget would love to receive the things they wouldn’t normally buy for themselves, such as nice hand creams, face washes, manicure kits and hair masks. Putting together a personal care package could be the perfect gift!
A donation on their behalf
Many students on campus are aware of all the wonderful social movements and causes in action today. Students for whom money can be tight often give back by volunteering their time - if there is any left between classes, exams, and part-time jobs. Make your philanthropic student proud by donating to their favourite cause on their behalf! The holidays are about selflessness, after all!
Last but not least, consider offering your student some timeless uOttawa gear. Head over to the bookstore and grab some garnet and grey to inspire that Gee-Gee pride!
