Students: Get ready for Google Apps (students with Webmail accounts only )
When you sign up for your new uOttawa Google Apps account, emails from your old student webmail account will be transferred to your new @uOttawa.ca Google account. The time needed for this transfer will depend on the number of emails and their size. Once you have signed up for your new @uOttawa.ca Google account, all new emails will be delivered to the new account inbox.
Note that the Google Apps sign up process deletes any forwarding instructions you may have given to your old student webmail account and automatically replaces them with instructions to forward email to your new @uOttawa.ca Google account.
How to prepare for the email transfer
- Sort through your webmail inbox and folders, and delete any emails that do not need to be transferred to the new account.
- Delete any unwanted or unused folders. Remaining folders will be converted into labels in the new account.
- Delete any old, no longer needed contacts.
What will be transferred
- Email messages from your Inbox, Drafts, and Sent folders
- Email messages contained in other folders
- Contact lists
- Any forwarding in place before you set up your Google account will be removed, and will be replaced automatically with forwarding to your new Gmail account. In addition, any new e-mail received will be sent to your new Gmail account.
What won't be transferred
- Messages in the old Webmail account Trash and Junk folders.
- Messages with questionable content (viruses or spam).
- Messages larger than 25 MB (includes attachments).
- Email accounts that are greater than 24 GB.
- Messages with executable code/attachments, such as .exe, .zip, .tar, .tgz, .taz, .z, .gz.
Important: Once the transfer begins, you will no longer be able to access your old webmail account, and so you will not be able to access any emails that have not been transferred. We encourage you to contact the Computing Help Centre at 613-562-5800 ext. 6555 or using the Computing assistance request form for assistance.
