UOHS Smoking Cessation Program

Research by the University of Ottawa Heart Institute (UOHI) has shown that people who try to quit smoking with counseling and cessation medications experience double or triple the success rate in quitting smoking long term.

Smoking cessation is a preventive health priority for the University of Ottawa Health Services Family Health Team.  In 2002, our providers adopted the Ottawa Model for Smoking Cessation (OMSC) in Primary Care to help our patients quit smoking.

The Ottawa Model for Smoking Cessation in the outpatient setting involves a common approach to:

  • identify your smoking status at clinic visits;
  • advise you on strategies to quit smoking;
  • provide assistance with quitting while at the clinic; and
  • Ensure follow-up counseling once you leave the clinic to help you stay smoke-free.

Visit the University of Ottawa Heart Institute’s website for more information on the Ottawa Model for Smoking Cessation (OMSC)

To access the UOHS Smoking Cessation Program:

Step 1. Register with UOHS
Step 2. Obtain a referral from your family physician or health practitioner
Step 3. Book and appointment with UOHS
