To create your Web pages, you can either:
If you have chosen the second option, you will need to transfer your files, from your PC or Mac to the UNIX server and set up the permissions, allowing the world to view them through a browser. To transfer a file from a PC or a Mac to a server, you can use an FTP Client. The most commonly used FTP client is WS_FTP for PC and Fetch for Mac. The Windows 95 version of WS_FTP is available on our server for downloading. If you are currently using the WS_FTP version 3.0, we strongly recommend you to download and install the Windows 95 version. It gives you much more functionality. One example is, it allows you to transfer files with an extension of more than three characters. Procedures to Follow when Using WS_FTP95
WS_FTP95 and the PermissionsWhen you are creating a new file, no matter how you do it (directly on the server through the pico editor or by transferring it from your PC), you need to set the permissions on that file so that it can be read or executed by a browser. We normally set permissions through UNIX. Procedures on how to set up permissions:
With WS_FTP95, you do not need to log on to your (WWW) account to set the permissions as mentioned earlier at point #7 of the procedures of transfering files via WS_FTP95. If in the Initialize Command field you entered SITE UMASK 002, all your files will be transferred with the read permission. |
