Research information:
Dr Huhua Cao has been involved in extensive research activities in North America, Asia, Eastern Europe and Africa. In recent years, his research has focused on urban and regional development in China, particularly minority regions, and around the following three axes: 1) Mobility and Urbanisation; 2) Spatial inequality and Accessibility of social services; 3) Ecosystem Assessment and Management (EAM). The majority of his research is founded on the usage of geostatistical methods and Geographic Information Systems (GIS). Professor Cao’s research has been funded several times by institutions including the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC), Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR), Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA), International Development Research Centre (IDRC), Human Resources and Skills Development Canada (HRSDC) and also by Chinese Government ministries such as the Ministry of Science and Technology and Ministry of Education.Area(s) of expertise:

Research information:
My research focuses on improving our understanding of glacier dynamics and recent changes of ice masses, and their links to climate change. This involves making measurements using both satellite imagery and fieldwork. In recent years I have undertaken fieldwork in the Canadian High Arctic, Yukon, Antarctica and Himalayas.

As an agronomist by training, with a PhD in genetics and plant breeding, I’ve worked in a wide array of contexts and countries. I have held long-term positions in Ivory Coast, Réunion Island, Canada, Brazil and France, as well as gone on missions in close to 40 countries. My scientific efforts have centred mostly on corn and sugar cane. Over time, given my responsibilities as a director of research, I became interested in the links between the social sciences and agronomics in general, with a special focus on the interaction between social dynamics, governance models and global transformations in rural settings.
Over the past four years, I worked as research and strategy director for CIRAD (Centre de coopération internationale en recherche agronomique pour le développement), which focuses on the prime issues surrounding the role of agriculture in southern hemisphere nations, both from the discipline’s traditional perspectives (production, transformation, food production and processing, etc.) and from its newer angles (environmental impact, ecological services, poverty reduction, land management, multi-functionality, etc.). At CIRAD, I played an active role in recasting and redirecting the research issues and scientific strategies of the major French, European and international centres and institutes in the field.

My research focuses on municipal bylaws that regulate graffiti and busking in the City of Ottawa. I also have done extensive research (interviews, data collection) on the history of legislation regarding such bylaws, which includes ethnographic research (interviews with key stakeholders as well as artists in both communities) on the graffiti and busking scene in The City of Ottawa.

Research information:
I am an expert on the effects of climate warming on polar regions, especially on permafrost, the landscape, and northerners. I currently work in the Yukon and the Canadian High Arctic on subjects such as measuring recent changes in permafrost temperatures, predicting current permafrost distribution and rates of thaw, and landsliding. This research is relevant to hazard prediction and the development of roads and pipelines, as well as adaptation to climate change in the North. I am currently Senior Vice-President of the International Permafrost Association and will become President in 2012.

My main field of research is applied Geomatics. Geomatics consists of Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Remote Sensing (RS), Global Positioning systems(GPS), Spatial Analysis, Cartography, and Geodesy. Like information systems in general, geomatics is an enabling science that extends the IT model into the geographic realm with techniques and methods applicable to almost every conceivable discipline. For example, I currently have active projects in fields including: disaster mapping of tsunami devestated regions in the Bay of Bengal, health geography/epidimiology, wireless telecommunications, precision agriculture, and Quaternary climate change among others. Geomatics underlies our everyday activities as the science is used for both the planning and management of anything that exists in geographic space.
