January 18

A Conversation with Michael Ignatieff

Liberal Leader Michael Ignatieff has started the New Year with a cross-Canada campus tour to meet with young Canadians in the lead-up to Canada at 150: Rising to the Challenge - a non-partisan conference being held in Montreal in March 2010. “We’ll be talking about the kind of Canada we want in 2017—and what we need to do today and tomorrow to get there,” says Michael Ignatieff. Lunchtime Talk: Marc Mayrand

Reform of the US Intelligence Community: What Was Intended, and How Well Has It Worked?

The Centre for International Policy Studies in collaboration with the Graduate School of Public and International Affairs presents a talk with Margaret Henoch, Former Senior Operations Officer with the CIA Clandestine Service. Following 9/11 and the Iraqi invasion, the American intelligence community underwent intense scrutiny and was dramatically changed by new legislation which created the post of Director of National Intelligence and 'reformed' the institutions making up the community. What were they intended to achieve, what did they attempt to do, and, perhaps most importantly of all, what did they achieve? Is the US intelligence community in better shape today to confront global challenges than it was a decade ago? From the Front Line: Canadian Forces in Afghanistan

The Centre for International Policy Studies presents a talk by Brigadier General Jonathan Vance, former Canadian Commander in Kandahar, who recently returned from Afghanistan where he served as Commander of Canadian and NATO Forces in Kandahar Province from February to November 2009. Book Launch

The University of Ottawa Press will host the launch of Modernité en transit | Modernity in Transit. The bilingual volume will bring the reader to rethink (post)modernity. Opera
7 p.m., University Centre, Alumni Auditorium (85 University Pvt)
The School of Music presents the University of Ottawa Opera Company stage production of Mozart’s Le Nozze di Figaro (Marriage of Figaro) with musical and stage direction by Sandra Graham. The opera, to be performed in Italian with English recitatives, will feature full sets, costumes, and accompaniment by the Opera Music Chamber Orchestra.
