University of Ottawa professor Abdulmotaleb El Saddik elected Fellow of the Engineering Institute of Canada

OTTAWA, January 22, 2010  —  The University of Ottawa is pleased to announce that Abdulmotaleb El Saddik, professor at the Faculty of Engineering and director of the Multimedia Communications Research Laboratory, will be inducted as a Fellow of the Engineering Institute of Canada (EIC).

EIC recognized Dr. El Saddik for his research, which explores leading-edge multimedia and new technologies reproducing the human sensory fields, particularly touch and smell. El Saddik and his team are in fact close to making the “transmission” of these two senses over the Internet possible for everybody.

“Professor El Saddik merits this honor as his work has garnered much recognition in scientific circles, both in Canada and abroad” said Mona Nemer, vice-president, research at the University of Ottawa. “The entire research community is proud of his accomplishments.”

Abdulmotaleb El Saddik is currently the youngest Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Engineering (F'CAE), as well as the youngest Canadian inducted as a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (F'IEEE).

The Fellowship of the Engineering Institute of Canada, which will be presented during the Institute’s Annual Awards Banquet in February, is granted to a very select number of engineers who have made exceptional contributions in their field in Canada.

The University of Ottawa is committed to research excellence and encourages an interdisciplinary approach to knowledge creation, which attracts the best academic talent from across Canada and around the world.
