Snow Festival 2010
January 25-28, University of Ottawa Campus (550 Cumberland Street)
The Community Life team is once again organizing a unique and fun filled four day snow festival. Activities include maple taffy on snow, Beavertails, snowshoeing, dog sledding, skating on the Rideau Canal, winter camping, and many more activities. Conference – Securing Africa’s Trigger
11:30 p.m., Desmarais Building, Room 3120 (55 Laurier Ave East)
The Centre for International Policy Studies (CIPS) presents a conference titled “Securing Africa’s Trigger: DRC’s Challenges” given by Caty Clément who is a representative of the Geneva Centre for Security Policy. Dr. Clément has worked extensively on conflict and mediation both as an academic and a practitioner with a strong Africa focus. She has been a regional expert at the UN Security Council group of experts investigating violations of the DRC Arms Embargo. Conference – The Auto Industry

The Graduate School of Public and International Affairs and the CN-Tellier Chair of Business and Public Policy present a conference titled “The Auto Industry: Restructuring or Revolution?” given by Professor Christian Navarre. Conference – WFP and Humanitarian Assistance in Afghanistan

The Centre for International Policy Studies (CIPS) presents a conference titled “WFP and Humanitarian Assistance in Afghanistan” presented by a special guest from the World Food Programme (WFP), Stefano Porretti. A geologist by profession, Mr. Porretti has worked with the WFP since 1987. Since 2008 he has served as the WFP representative & country director in Afghanistan. Conference on Climate Change

The Centre for International Policy Studies (CIPS) presents Frances Wood from the British Foreign and Commonwealth Office who will present a lecture titled “Climate Change: What Does it Mean for Our Security”. Frances Wood is the Head of Climate Security in the UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office. She leads a small team in London and a network of attachés to broaden and deepen the global debate on the security implications of climate change. Conference with Dr. Thomas Homer-Dixon

The Sustainable Development Office of the University of Ottawa invites Dr. Homer-Dixon, former Minister of Foreign Affairs, who will present a lecture on how crisis’ can create opportunities for deep change in entrenched social structures, politics and behaviors and how seemingly small projects to improve the world can have widespread and enormously positive results during those periods of turbulence. Dr. Homer-Dixon holds the Centre for International Governance Innovation Chair of Global Systems at the Balsillie School of International Affairs in Waterloo, and is a Professor in the Centre for Environment and Business in the Faculty of Environment, University of Waterloo. Fourth Annual Capital Hoops Classic
6 p.m., Scotia Bank Place (1000 Palladium Drive, Kanata)
The University of Ottawa Gee-Gees and the Carleton University Ravens will compete head to head during this year’s Capital Hoops Classic. This year’s match will once again feature two games: women’s basketball teams, Carleton Ravens against the University of Ottawa Gee-Gees at 6 p.m., followed by the men’s basketball teams, Ravens against the Gee-Gees, set for an 8 p.m. tipoff. This is the fourth match of what has become an annual regular-season affair between the two schools and will showcase some of the finest basketball players in the country. Opera
7 p.m., University Centre, Alumni Auditorium (85 University Pvt)
The School of Music presents the University of Ottawa Opera Company stage production of Mozart’s Le Nozze di Figaro (Marriage of Figaro) with musical and stage direction by Sandra Graham. The opera, to be performed in Italian with English recitatives, will feature full sets, costumes, and accompaniment by the Opera Music Chamber Orchestra.
