Students from Haiti: University of Ottawa covers tuition and residence costs

OTTAWA, January 26, 2010  —  As numerous activities aimed at providing assistance to the Haitian population are under way on the campus of the University of Ottawa, the institution announces it will cover tuition and residence fees for the current academic session for international students from Haiti.

This initiative will provide the 23 Haitian students here on a student visa with help for some of their expenses at a time when their country is in a very difficult financial position following the tragic events of January 12.

“The University of Ottawa recognizes the courage of the Haitian people and is firmly committed to help the members of its community going through this extremely difficult situation,” said Allan Rock, president and vice-chancellor of the University.

Since the earthquake struck, the University of Ottawa has increased its efforts to help support the Haitian members of its community and the entire Haitian population. In addition to numerous information sessions being held to bring together the different services available at the University, a number of fundraising initiatives are under way across the campus. On January 28, the University will also host a panel of experts who will discuss the humanitarian crisis facing Haiti from a variety of perspectives.
