Haiti: five uOttawa experts, five perspectives on the humanitarian crisis

OTTAWA, January 27, 2010  —  Following the disaster that affected Haiti on January 12, the University of Ottawa is putting together a bilingual multidisciplinary panel of experts to analyze the humanitarian crisis caused by the terrible earthquake.

Five uOttawa professors will present five different perspectives of the humanitarian crisis:

Murat Saatcioglu, from the Faculty of Engineering, will explore the disaster’s impact on physical structures and the science behind earthquake engineering.

Louise Lemyre, a risk and health expert from the Institute on Population Health, will discuss the toll on the Haitian population’s health and stressors.

Pierre Beaudet, an expert in international development at the School of International Development and Global Studies (SIDGS), and has written extensively about Haiti and other third-world countries.

Philippe Régnier, an international co-operation expert also from the SIDGS, will discuss how to finance development after the rubble is cleared.

Marc-François Bernier, from the Department of Communication, is a journalism ethics expert. He will examine the media’s behavior in the crisis.

The host of CBC News Network’s Power & Politics, Evan Solomon will moderate the panel.
