Marcel Mérette named dean of Social Sciences

OTTAWA, January 28, 2010  —  The University of Ottawa is pleased to announce the appointment of Marcel Mérette as dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences. Dean Mérette begins his term on February 15, 2010.

Until his recent appointment, Marcel Mérette was a professor in the Department of Economics, as well as vice-dean of research and interim vice-dean of graduate studies at the Faculty of Social Sciences.

The University is convinced that Professor Mérette’s in-depth knowledge, broad experience and tremendous energy will allow him to excel as dean and to guide the Faculty of Social Sciences through the many challenges it faces as both its student population and professorial ranks undergo major growth.

Dean Mérette, who holds degrees from Laval University and the University of Montreal and has done postdoctoral studies at Yale University, is very well versed in the world of economics and postsecondary education, as he has worked extensively in both. He also has a wealth of publications to his credit and has contributed to a large number of professional and academic projects.

“On behalf of the University of Ottawa community, I extend my very best wishes for success to Dean Mérette as he takes on his new responsibilities. I also take this opportunity to thank Catherine Lee, professor at the School of Psychology and former vice-dean of graduate studies, for her excellent work as acting dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences.”, said Allan Rock, president and vice-chancellor at the University of Ottawa.

The Faculty of Social Sciences boasts uOttawa’s largest student population. It offers undergraduate and graduate programs, in both English and French, across three departments, five schools and one institute.
