Talk by Colin Keating

The Center for International Policy Studies (CIPS) invites Colin Keating, Editor in Chief of Security Council Report, who will give a talk titled The UN Security Council: Can an Elected Member Like Canada Really Hop to Make an Impact? Ambassador Colin Keating is the Executive Director of Security Council Report which operates under the auspices of Columbia University and is producing regular reports on the work of the United Nations Security Council. Human Rights and Environmental Disruptions Lecture Series

The Human Rights Research and Education Center in collaboration with the IUCN Academy of Environmental Law presents the first conference of the new lecture series titled Eco-refugees. The talk will be given by Peter Showler, Director of the Refugee Forum and professor at the Faculty of Law. The Human Rights and Environmental Disruption Lecture Series 2010 focuses on a range of topics relating to the intersection of human rights and environmental law. Does tutoring by foster parents help foster children in primary school make gains in reading and math?

The Centre for Research on Educational and Community Services presents a noon hour conference with a discussion based on their first-year results from a randomized evaluation on foster parent tutoring and its effects on foster children’s performance in reading and math in primary school. Lecturers include Bob Flynn, Professor at the School of Psychology and Principal Scientist at the Institute of Population Health; and Marie-Pierre Paquet, Research Coordinator of RESPs for Kids in Care Project. Evolution of Warfare in Independent Africa
2:30 p.m., Tabaret Hall, Room 319 (550 Cumberland Street)
The Graduate School of Public and International Affairs and the School of International Development and Global Studies will host a conference by Will Reno of the Northwestern University. Professor Reno is a specialist in African politics and the politics of “collapsing states”. His current work examines violent commercial organizations in Africa, the Soviet Union, and the Balkans and their relationships to state power and global economic actors. Reno’s research takes him to places such as Sierra Leone, Congo, and Central Asia where he talks to insurgents, government officials, and foreigners involved in these conflicts. Conference on Al Quaeda in Yemen

The Centre for International Policy Studies (CIPS) in collaboration with the Graduate School of Public and International Affairs presents a conference titled Fighting Al Qaeda in Yemen: Re-thinking the Islamist Threat by Christina Hellmich of the University of Reading. Dr. Hellmich is a specialist in Middle East politics with a particular research interest in Political Islam, International Security and Global Health. During fieldwork in Iraq and the Yemen, she has conducted extensive research in the role of Islamic preaching during the process of radicalization as well as gender relations and women's health.
