Conference in Celebration of International Women’s Day

The Institute of Women’s Studies in collaboration with the Amethyst Women’s Addiction Centre, the Ottawa Rape Crisis Centre and the Sexual Assault Support Centre of Ottawa present a conference titled Feminism: the other “F” Word. Feature panelists include Anna Besch, founder of Women Against Slavery and professor at Immaculata University in Pennsylvania; Tatiana Fraser, executive director of Girls Action Foundation and co-founder of POWER Camp; Stephani Roy McCallum, managing director of Dialogue Partners; and Dominique Bourque, author and professor at the University of Ottawa’s Institute of Women’s Studies. Community Forum: Why Place Still Matters

Some have suspected that where we live impacts our physical and emotional health. In February 2008, researchers at the University of Ottawa released the results of a study that examined 89 neighborhoods in Ottawa and confirmed that place matters. As a follow-up, a community forum to consider and discuss Why Place STILL Matters has been organized by the Ottawa Neighborhood Study which is based at the uOttawa Institute of Population Health; an expert panel will discuss how the research outcomes have already helped to shape the city’s community development framework and the strategic priorities of many community health and social service agencies. The forum will be a call for community action to support healthier neighborhoods. Human Rights and Environmental Disruptions Lecture Series

The Human Rights Research and Education Center and the IUCN Academy of Environmental Law present the second lecture on Eco-Refugees presented by Dr. Robert McLeman, professor of Geography and coordinator of Environmental Studies at the University of Ottawa. His research includes studies of environmental refugees, climate change-related threats to international security, linkages between sustainable development and refugee protection, as well as climate change and migration in regions as diverse as the Great Plains of North American and contemporary West Africa. The Chair of Ukrainian Studies in collaboration with the Ukrainian Canadian Professional and Business Association invite Mr. Lubomyr Luciuk, professor of Political Geography and head of the Department of Politics and Economics at the Royal Military College of Canada, will present a lecture titled Righting an Historical Injustice: Canada’s First National Internment Operations. Obama's Foreign Policy: 'Yes We Can' or 'No We Can't'?

The Centre for Political Studies (CIPS) in collaboration with the Canadian International Council – National Capital Branch will host a conference by Stephen John Stedman of Stanford University. Mr. Stedman's research addresses the future of international organizations and institutions, an area of study inspired by his work at the United Nations where he was recruited to serve as the research director of the UN High-Level Panel on Threats, Challenges and Change. A Call to Action to End Poverty

The Graduate School of Public and International Affairs (GSPIA) presents a conference titled In from the Margins: A Call to Action to End Poverty given by The Honorable Senator Art Eggleton and The Honorable Senator Hugh Segal, Deputy Chairs of the Standing Committee on Social Affairs, Science and Technology. They will present the recently released Senate report on Poverty, Housing and Homelessness and will summarize recommendations intended to break the destructive burden of poverty and homelessness in our country. Opera: Menotti’s The Medium
2 p.m. & 8 p.m., Perez Building, Freiman Hall (610 Cumberland Street)
The School of Music presents the University of Ottawa Opera Company’s stage production of Gian Carlo Menotti’s The Medium with music and stage direction by Sandra Graham. The Opera will feature full sets and costumes as well as a cast of School of Music students who have taken the University of Ottawa’s course in Opera, which has been offered for more than 30 years. This course gives the students the opportunity to acquire an overview of the operations of an opera company functions as students are involved in all aspects of the production.
