OTTAWA, March 19, 2010  —  The University of Ottawa’s School of Translation and Interpretation (STI) has received $1.7 million in funding through the Government of Canada’s Canadian Language Sector Enhancement Program (CLSE).

“This $1.7 million gives the STI the ability to offer scholarships that will attract and support many students in the field of translation,” explained Lynne Bowker, interim director of uOttawa’s School of Translation and Interpretation. “The Canadian Language Sector Enhancement Program stresses the importance of language professions and focuses attention on the fact that translators and interpreters perform highly specialized work for which they must be trained. This program will also give us the ability to promote STI — one of the best schools of translation and interpretation in North America.”

The generous funds being directed to uOttawa by the Government of Canada fall under the CLSE’s University Scholarships in Translation. This component of the program is intended to enable postsecondary institutions to attract, retain, and graduate new translators and interpreters. Another objective is to encourage students to pursue a career in all language areas: translation, interpretation, terminology or localization.

“With the University Scholarships in Translation, uOttawa’s School of Translation and Interpretation will be able to better attract and train tomorrow’s translators and interpreters,” confirms Mrs. Bowker.

The Canadian Language Sector Enhancement Program is a new program that gives effect to the commitments made by the federal government in the Roadmap for Canada's Linguistic Duality 2008-2013: Acting for the Future.
