The University of Ottawa to host International Symposium on Language Planning in Capitals and Urban Environments
OTTAWA,
March 24, 2010 —
The Official Languages and Bilingualism Institute (OLBI) and the Centre for Governance of the University of Ottawa are organizing the first International Symposium on Language Planning in Capitals and Urban Environments: Practices and Challenges this Thursday and Friday, March 25 and 26. By focussing on common issues such as administrative management, symbolic representation and civic engagement, the OLBI hopes to generate fertile discussions while providing a framework for debate. It is also anticipated the symposium will yield major contributions on aspects of both policy and governance.
The symposium will bring together representatives of Canadian and European cities selected because of their bilingual character. The City of Ottawa will act as host city and welcome representatives from Moncton, Brussels, Helsinki, Biel and Barcelona. One administrator and one university scholar per city will participate in the event as speaker or panellist.
The symposium is made possible through collaboration with the Office of the Commissioner of Official Languages and the City of Ottawa, and in partnership with Heritage Canada.
For more information, including a detailed program and list of special guests, please visit the Symposium website.
