Earth Hour
8:30 p.m., uOttawa campus (550 Cumberland St., Ottawa)
Last year alone, energy costs at the University of Ottawa reached $12 million, and we expect costs to rise again this year. In order to reduce our carbon footprint, the Sustainable Development Office has developed a plan to reduce the campus’ energy consumption and to create a culture where staff and students are aware that even a small act such as turning off the lights can help us become more sustainable. The University of Ottawa will participate in Earth Hour 2010. Last year, the University reduced its electrical consumption by 12%. Let’s see what can be accomplished this year when the community comes together again. For more information, please contact Marc Pandi at 613-562-5800 extension 2691 or mpandi@uOttawa.ca.

Through providing this highly-valued service during a time of national crisis, women had greater freedom than ever before to engage in male norms during leisure, including smoking. This presentation traces the close alignment between women working in waged or salaried positions from 1945 and their use of cigarettes as a performative device.
