University of Ottawa Media Calendar: April 6 to 10, 2010

April 6

Haiti today, Haiti tomorrow: contrasting perspectives
9 a.m. to 12 p.m., Desmarais Building, Room 4101 (55 Laurier Ave East)
The School of International Development and Global Studies (SIDGS) of the University of Ottawa invites the media to the opening and main plenary sessions of an international symposium on the reconstruction and development of Haiti. Her Excellency the Right Honourable Michaëlle Jean, Governor General of Canada, will participate in the opening ceremony. Guest lecturers from various disciplines will explore the following question from different perspectives: How can the humanitarian crisis in Haiti be transformed into an opportunity for endogenous, equitable and sustainable development? The public and media are also invited to attend the third plenary session on April 7 at 3 p.m. in room 12102 of the Desmarais Building, when the delegates will summarize the symposium and present their recommendations. Chamber Music Master Class with “Made in Canada” Ensemble

Theatre Play “Blood Relations”
8 p.m., Academic Hall (133, Seraphin Marion)
The Department of Theatre’s Unicorn Theatre invites you to the opening night of Sharon Pollock’s Blood Relations, directed by Bronwyn Steinberg from April 6 to 10, 2010. 25th Michel Cloutier Marketing Competition
4:30 p.m., Desmarais Building, Room 4101 (55 Laurier Ave East)
This year marks the 25th anniversary of the Michel Cloutier Marketing Competition where the top 3 marketing teams in the Marketing Strategy course at the Telfer School of Management will compete against each other for the best marketing campaign. The Competition was originally introduced by the late Professor and Associate Dean, Michel Cloutier, in 1986 and was renamed in his honour in 1991. The Competition brings students closer to the business community by working on actual business cases presented by a sponsoring company. Public lecture on infant studies and computational models of theory of mind

Lecture on the transformation of civil wars (1800-2010)
10:30 p.m., Desmarais Building, Room 3120 (55 Laurier Ave East)
The Faculty of Social Sciences’ Centre for International Policy Studies (CIPS) presents a conference titled The Transformation of Civils Wars (1800-2010) presented by Stathis Kalyvas of Yale University. Stathis Kalyvas is the Arnold Wolfer professor of Political Science and director of the Program on Order, Conflict, and Violence. He is the author of the Logic of Violence in Civil War and The Rise of Christian Democracy in Europe. Public Lecture on Religion, Law and Social Theory

The Canada Research Chair for the Contextualization of Religion in a Diverse Canada and the Faculty of Law, Civil Law Section will host a public lecture titled Critical Thinkers in Religion, Law and Social Theory presented by James Tully who is the University of Victoria’s Distinguished Professor of Political Sciences. Tully who teaches and studies contemporary political thought and its history, is working on a collection of essays on peace and freedom. The Ottawa Regional Sciences Fair encourages students from grades 7 to 12 to research, develop and present projects in the fields of science and engineering. Members of the University of Ottawa’s Faculty of Engineering will be available to answer questions during the Ottawa Regional Sciences Fair at Hillcrest High School.
