University of Ottawa receives $11.8 million from the Government of Ontario

OTTAWA, April 6, 2010  —  The University of Ottawa received today an additional funding of $11.8 million as part of the Government of Ontario’s strategic commitment to postsecondary education and training announced in the 2010 budget.

The additional $11.8 million funding, part of a $155 million province-wide investment, will serve to support the Open Ontario plan of increased access to postsecondary education in Ontario and will ensure that the undergraduate growth in 2009-2010 is fully funded.

“Today’s announcement emphasizes the importance of investing in higher education and this money will give us the ability to focus our efforts on our top priority — our students and the student experience” said Louis de Melo, vice-president, external relations. “This funding enhances our University’s financial situation at a time when many Canadian institutions are facing economic challenges.”

“Our Open Ontario plan recognizes the importance of ensuring we have the highly skilled and educated workers we need to compete in the new economy. Our government is pleased to work with the University of Ottawa to help students prepare for the jobs of the future here in eastern Ontario,” said John Milloy, Minister of Training, Colleges and Universities.

The University of Ottawa is a cosmopolitan community of over 40,000 students, faculty and staff who live, work and study in both English and French. At the heart of Canada's capital, the University of Ottawa is one of our country's leading research universities.
