2010 Telfer-ICOBC India Forum: India – Managing the Infrastructure and Security Issues
8 a.m. to 2 p.m., Desmarais Building (55 Laurier Ave. East)
The Telfer School of Management, in partnership with the Indo Canada Ottawa Business Chamber, presents the 2010 Telfer-ICOBC India Forum. This half-day event involving senior business and government leaders from Canada and India is designed to help Canadian companies better understand the key issues and risks in the market related to infrastructure and security. Topics of the conference include: the state of Indian infrastructure in the face of the evolving demands, the priorities for Indian infrastructure development in the next five years, opportunities for Canadian companies to play a heightened role in infrastructure development projects in India, the underlying causes for the current security issues in India, the challenges and risks related to security issues and the strategies and tactics that international companies are employing. Europe, the Financial Crisis, and “Staying on Top” in the 21st Century

The Centre for International Policy Studies (CIPS) welcomes Mr. Mark Blyth from Brown University to present a lecture titled This Time it Really is Different: Europe, the Financial Crisis, and “Staying on Top” in the 21st Century. Mr. Blyth is a professor of international political economy in the Department of Political Science at Brown’s University, and a faculty fellow at the Watson Institute for International Studies. His areas of interest include comparative and international political economy, with a particular focus on questions of uncertainty and randomness in complex systems. Book Launch for the Editors of Cultural Political Economy

The Centre for International Policy Studies and the Centre on Governance present the launch of Professor Jacqueline Best and Professor Matthew Paterson’s new co-edited volume Cultural Political Economy (Routledge, 2010). The book examines the concept of culture and how it can be used to develop analyses of the dynamics and problems of the global political economy. Beyond the Credit Crunch: Local Authorities’ Response to the Recession in the UK

The School of Political Studies and the Center on Governance present a conference titled Beyond the Credit Crunch: Local Authorities’ Response to Recession in the UK by Caroline Chapain of the Centre for Urban and Regional Studies of the University of Birmingham in the United Kingdom. During the past 18 months, the UK has been deeply affected by the recession with its economy contracting and unemployment rates rising from 5.2% in January-March 2008 to 7.8% in October-December 2009., It is often local authorities who are at the forefront of dealing with the impacts of the recession on people and places. Green Shoots in Criminology

The 4th Annual for Justice Studies and Research Laboratory (JSRL) Symposium is a two-day event centering on the ways in which young researchers are navigating within tensions of contemporary criminology. Over two days, students, either alone or with their supervisors, will have the opportunity to present and discuss their work as it relates to the known tensions and debates regarding the future of the field of inquiry in both abstractly theoretical and practical applied terms. CGA Accounting Research Centre at the University of Ottawa

The CGA Accounting Research Centre at the University of Ottawa along with the generous support of the Certified General Accountants Association of Ontario presents the17th Annual Conference themed Business and financial crises: Some urgent priorities for accounting and accountants. According to the late John Kenneth Galbraith, the famous Canadian economist, economic crises are a basic component of the expanding and contracting cycles that characterize a market economy. However, economic crises seem to be occurring with alarming frequency and great depth. In addition, these crises seem to be more disruptive and have more harmful consequences that impact corporations, their stakeholders and society in general. This conference will provide accountants and business professionals with an opportunity for explore urgent priorities for the profession to ensure its ongoing relevance in a turbulent and challenging environment.
