University of Ottawa awarded more research funding for innovative projects

OTTAWA, April 23, 2010  —  The University of Ottawa continues to demonstrate its research vitality with new funding to three of its researchers. They will share a total amount of $807,523 in support of cutting-edge research from the Canada Foundation for Innovation (CFI) as part of the Leaders Opportunity Fund.

Here are the three researchers who will benefit from the funding:

Maxim Berezovski, PhD, assistant professor in the Department of Chemistry, will receive funding in support of his bioanalytical and molecular interaction laboratory, where he and his team focus on understanding molecular processes and mechanisms of cancer and immune diseases as well as developing innovative biopharmaceuticals.

Stéphane Lévesque, PhD, associate professor of history education at the Faculty of Education, receives funding in support of a virtual history laboratory. Prof. Levesque’s research focuses on web-based educational programs, specifically for teaching Canadian history. His work integrates the most advanced technology and virtual imaging in order to improve the learning of key historical events taught in the school curriculum.

Alexandre Poulain, PhD, assistant professor in the Department of Biology, receives funding in support of a laboratory for molecular biogeochemistry of toxic metals. Prof. Poulain’s work explores the effects of trace metals such as mercury on the ecosystem — specifically in colder regions. His research aims to advance our knowledge of metal and metalloid biogeochemistry in order to properly manage and protect the northern ecology.

“Programs such as the Leaders Opportunity Fund are critical for our outstanding researchers and give them the ability to move their research from the labs to real applications,” said Mona Nemer, vice-president, research. “Thanks to them, the University of Ottawa competes with the best institutions from around the world and helps strengthen Canada’s capacity for innovation.”

The University of Ottawa is committed to research excellence and encourages an interdisciplinary approach to knowledge creation, which attracts the best academic talent from across Canada and around the world.
