University of Ottawa professor develops key defence tool against terrorism

OTTAWA, May 3, 2010  —  Professor Murat Saatcioglu, from the University of Ottawa’s Department of Civil Engineering, has developed a new technology using a shock tube that simulates shock waves induced by bomb blasts. Professor Saatcioglu’s innovative work appeared in an article in today’s Ottawa Citizen.

A professor of structural engineering, Murat Saatcioglu’s research interests include behaviour and design of reinforced concrete structures, with particular emphasis on seismic behaviour and design of concrete buildings and bridges.

His main research objective is to develop new and innovative seismic retrofit technologies for reinforced concrete structures, such as buildings and bridges. An important component of this research is testing of large-scale specimens in the University of Ottawa’s Structures Laboratory, one of the few pseudo-dynamic testing facilities in the world. This facility provides a unique opportunity for verification, since it allows the simulation of earthquakes in slow motion.
