Michaëlle Jean’s UNESCO office to be housed at our university

OTTAWA, October 1, 2010  —  It is with great pleasure and excitement that I announce that Canada’s Privy Council Office has chosen the University of Ottawa to house the office of UNESCO’s new special envoy for Haiti, The Right Honourable Michaëlle Jean.

This is a very special opportunity for all members of the University of Ottawa community. The arrival of Michaëlle Jean and the UNESCO organization on our campus will give our institution unique visibility around the world. Moreover, the role and mandate of UNESCO and the mission they have entrusted to Michaëlle Jean reflects the values our university has always promoted.

The considerable expertise that many of our professors and students are developing here and abroad is today being recognized by one of the most respected international organizations in the world, something that will undoubtedly lead to even more partnerships between uOttawa and other international organizations.

A former journalist and strong advocate of human rights, Michaëlle Jean demonstrates an unwavering commitment to dialogue and solidarity between communities, equality between men and women, freedom of the press as well as the role of education in economic development and democracy.

Michaëlle Jean and her team will be located on the third floor of Tabaret Hall and should be moving onto campus before the end of the year. The Government of Canada will be responsible for the lease, the renovations and the office set-up.

Please join me in wishing Michaëlle Jean and her team a sincere welcome to our vibrant community.

Allan Rock
President of the University of Ottawa
