National ranking confirms uOttawa among top research universities in Canada

OTTAWA, October 27, 2010  —  The University of Ottawa continues to demonstrate excellence and leadership as one of the country’s 10 best research institutions, according to the latest results published by RE$EARCH Infosource Inc (RI).

In RI's list of Research Universities of the Year (RUY), released last week by the Toronto-based consulting group, the University of Ottawa ranks seventh overall in research in Canada. This is the fourth consecutive year the University of Ottawa has been among the top 10 universities in the area of research and is the second year in a row in seventh position. The ranking takes into account research funding, faculty research intensity, total number of publications, publication intensity and publication impact. In addition, the University moved up one spot from third to second place in Canada among universities with medical and doctoral programs for its extensive growth in publications.

In recent years, the University of Ottawa has gained significant momentum in the quality and quantity of research carried out. Exemplary researchers who raise the bar in their fields—researchers such as Paul Corkum and Robert W. Boyd, who have helped position our institution among the very best photonics research centres in the world; Steffany Bennett, who is exploring new leads to reverse the effects of Alzheimer’s disease; Roland Paris, renowned expert in international security, international governance and foreign policy; Michael Geist, known as one of the leading copyright scholars in the world; Lori Beaman, leading scholar in religious diversity and freedom; and Dr.Tohru Kitada, the world’s foremost expert in Parkinson’s disease—are among the many specialists who chose the University of Ottawa as their home.
