University of Ottawa holds debate on organ donation

OTTAWA, November 1, 2010  —  The University of Ottawa invites you to join a panel of experts at a town hall debate on issues related to organ donation from the points of view of various actors, ranging from the anthropologist to the “transplant tourist.” Entitled Who owns your body parts?, the debate will be moderated by Adrian Harewood, co-host of CBC News Ottawa and host of CBC News Ottawa Late Night and is part of the Johnson Lecture Series.

WHAT: Panel of experts on organ donation

WHEN: November 2, 2010, from 7 to 8:30 p.m.

WHERE: Agora, University Centre, 85 University, Level 0 (Concourse)

More than 95% of Canadians agree with organ donation, and approximately 50% have committed to organ donation. But the big question is, “Who owns your body parts?” If you can’t sell them in Canada, can you give them away? Should you be allowed to decide how they will be used? Is it okay to buy body parts from someone in a developing country?

Panellists:

- Dr. Amy L. Friedman, FACS, professor of surgery and director of the Transplant Program at SUNY Upstate Medical University
- Professor Vanessa Gruben, University of Ottawa, Common Law Section
- Professor Monir Moniruzzaman, PhD, Department of Anthropology and Center for Ethics and Humanities in the Life Sciences at Michigan State University
- Dr. Jeffrey Zaltzman, director of Renal Transplants at St. Michael’s Hospital in Toronto and chief medical officer of Trillium Gift of Life
