University of Ottawa to welcome Jean-Marie De Koninck to its annual Kesarwani Lecture

OTTAWA, December 7, 2010  —  Jean-Marie De Koninck, professor of mathematics at Laval University since 1972, will be the keynote speaker for this year’s annual Kesarwani Lecture, organized by the University of Ottawa’s Centre for University Teaching (CUT) in partnership with the Department of Mathematics and Statistics. In his lecture, Professor De Koninck demystifies the “secret life” of mathematics, in an effort to help listeners discover a world where no one is “bad at math.”

Named "Scientifique de l'année 2005" by Société Radio-Canada, Jean-Marie De Koninck is a member of the Order of Canada (1994) and of the Ordre national du Québec (1999). He is also the founding president of Opération Nez Rouge, a volunteer safe-ride-home program designed to prevent drinking and driving.

This lecture is made possible thanks to the Roop Kesarwani Lecture Endowment Fund, which was established by the family of the late Roop Kesarwani, professor of mathematics at the University of Ottawa for 30 years (1964-1994).The fund aims to promote excellence in university teaching and, as such, to enrich the learning environment. The Annual Kesarwani Lecture is one of the initiatives contributing to this objective.
