Exceptional research projects at the University of Ottawa receive $1.8 million in support

OTTAWA, January 21, 2011  —  The Canada Foundation for Innovation (CFI) has announced a total of $1,847,044 in funding to support seven exceptional research projects at the University of Ottawa.

“Today’s announcement highlights the excellent leading-edge research that is carried out at the University of Ottawa. These researchers will take full advantage of this support to establish state-of-the-art facilities that will undoubtedly have a major impact on Canada’s capacity for innovation on the international stage,” said Mona Nemer, vice-president, research.

The seven researchers receiving support are:

John Arnason, professor in the Department of Biology, who receives $211,325 for a project titled Analytical instrumentation for chemical and metabolite diversity: Ultra HPLC-Q-TOF-MS.

Elena Baranova, assistant professor in the Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering, who receives $87,249 for a facility for electrochemical engineering of advanced energy conversion systems.

Roberto Chica, assistant professor in the Department of Chemistry, who receives $239,945 for a protein engineering and computational protein design laboratory.

Nicolas Corradi, assistant professor in the Department of Biology, who receives $105,249 for a comparative fungal genomics laboratory.

Trevor Hall, director of the Centre for Research in Photonics and Canada Research Chair in Photonic Network Technology, who receives $500,963 for green information and communications technology networks research.

David Lohnes, professor in the Department of Cellular and Molecular Medicine, who receives $341,140 towards a facility for the generation, maintenance and preservation of novel genetic mouse models of development and disease.

Juan Scaiano, professor in the Department of Chemistry and Canada Research Chair in Applied Photochemistry, who receives $361,173 towards fluorescence spectroscopy tools for nanocatalysis studies.

This funding is part of an announcement of $61,291,274 in funding by the CFI, to be shared among 48 institutions across Canada. It falls under the CFI’s Leaders Opportunity Fund, which provides infrastructure support to Canadian institutions so they can attract and retain the best and brightest minds.
