University of Ottawa to welcome Anthony Lake, UNICEF executive director

OTTAWA, January 28, 2011  —  The University of Ottawa is proud to welcome Anthony Lake, UNICEF’s new executive director, who will speak at the University of Ottawa to launch the institution’s inaugural Humanitarian Relief Week. Lake will present the case that by using an equity-based approach, the global community can save more lives per dollar spent than with current strategies. A recent UNICEF study showed that an equity-based approach could avert an estimated 60% more under-five child deaths in a low-income, high-mortality country.

During the lecture, entitled Right in Principle, Right in Practice: An Equity-Based Approach for Children, Lake will discuss the UNICEF study. According to Anthony Lake, an equity-focused strategy will yield not only a moral victory—a right in principle, but an even more exciting one—a right in practice.
