University of Ottawa - University of Haifa Masters in Laws Exchange Agreement

OTTAWA, February 7, 2011  —  University of Ottawa is pleased to announce an innovative LL.M. exchange agreement which brings together two leading law schools, the University of Ottawa and the University of Haifa, Israel.

This progressive exchange offers a unique opportunity for law graduates to pursue studies in both countries’ jurisdictions, allowing them to gain not only a degree of proficiency in the laws of both systems, but also to expand their perspectives while examining cutting-edge questions through comparative analysis. Upon successful completion of the exchange requirements, students will receive two Masters in Laws degrees: one from Haifa and one from uOttawa.

According to Michael Geist, the Canada Research Chair in Internet and E-Commerce Law and a Common Law professor at the University of Ottawa, “This exciting exchange provides students with the rare opportunity to obtain two distinct LL.M. degrees after only one year of studies. Moreover, by being immersed in two vibrant cities with two distinct legal cultures, participants are sure to emerge from this experience with an unparalleled legal education.”

Students will spend September to February in Ottawa, March to June in Haifa, and will return to Ottawa for July and August to write their major research paper. Studies will be conducted in English and will offer the option, if desired, to focus on law and technology or human rights – areas of strength of both institutions – as part of the general LL.M. exchange.

“The University Ottawa-University of Haifa exchange is generously supported by the Gerald Schwartz and Heather Reisman Foundation,” states Dean of the Common Law Section, Bruce Feldthusen. “This makes it possible for several scholars from University of Ottawa to receive funding of $10,000. Additionally, the exchange affords students unfamiliar with Israel an opportunity to experience the country first-hand.”

The University of Ottawa – University of Haifa LL.M. exchange promises to take its place amongst the law school’s other exchange offerings as a valuable way for students to expand their legal and cultural perspectives.
