University of Ottawa salutes two talented young researchers
OTTAWA, February 17, 2011 — The University of Ottawa is pleased to announce that David Bryce and Elke Winter are recipients of this year’s Young Researcher of the Year Awards. The awards are presented annually to two University of Ottawa faculty members who have made exceptional contributions to research and training students.
David Bryce is an assistant professor in the Department of Chemistry. He received the award in the pure and applied science category for his contributions in the field of nuclear magnetic resonance. He has already established himself as a leader on the international scene within his field. His research focuses on nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy, specifically, solid-state NMR and quantum mechanical calculations of NMR parameters.
Elke Winter is an assistant professor in the Department of Sociology and Anthropology. She received the award for her contributions in the field of social sciences. She received the award not only for her contributions to the debate on minority nationalism and multiculturalism in Canada, but also for her recognized expertise in migration, identity and citizenship studies in Europe. Her research focuses on the sociology of ethnic relations and pluralism.
The Young Researcher of the Year Awards were created in 1995 in order to recognize excellence and encourage leadership and innovation in young researchers. Each award is accompanied by a $10,000 research grant.
