Presentation: UNESCO 2011 EFA Global Monitoring Report Launch
Kevin Watkins, Director, EFA Global Monitoring Report Team, UNESCO, and Allan Rock, President, University of Ottawa

The UNESCO 2011 EFA Global Monitoring Report Launch, themed “Armed Conflict and Education for All: Challenges and Opportunities” will be hosted by the Faculty of Social Sciences in collaboration with the Canadian Global Campaign for Education (CGCE). Opening remarks will be made by Allan Rock, President and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ottawa, and the keynote presentation will be given by Kevin Watkins, Director of the EFA Global Monitoring Report Team for UNESCO. The speech is titled “The Hidden Crisis: Armed Conflict and Education.” This event will be presented in English. Lecture: Shakespeare in Afghanistan
Corinne Jaber, director and actress

A 20-minute CBC-documentary film titled Shakespeare in Afghanistan by Sylvene Gilchristé will be presented by the Department of Theatre. A question and answer session will follow with Corinne Jaber, the film’s director and actress. The event will be held in English. As part of the Human Rights and Work Lecture Series, Professor Christian Brunelle of the Université Laval’s Faculty of Law and researcher at the University Research Center on Globalization and Labour will give a lecture titled “The Right to Dignity: A Vehicle for Citizenship at Work.” This event, organised by the Human Rights Research and Education Centre, will be presented in French. Panel: “Canada’s Foreign Intelligence Needs”
10 a.m., Desmarais Building, Room 3102 (55 Laurier Ave. E.)

The Centre for International Policy Studies (CIPS), in collaboration with the National Security Research Project, will host the first of a series of public workshops, which will be devoted to a study of key issues in the changing security and policy environment in Canada since the 9/11 attacks. Members of the panel will include David Pratt, senior vice-president for public affairs at CGI Consulting and former Minister of National Defence; Greg Fyffe, professor at the Graduate School of Public and International Affairs (GSPIA) of the University of Ottawa; Paul Robinson, professor at the GSPIA of the University of Ottawa; Barry Cooper, professor at the Department of Political Science at the University of Calgary; and acting as moderator, Wesley Wark, professor at the GSPIA of the University of Ottawa. Four experts on Arab affairs

A panel on “Tunisia, Egypt: Unfolding Revolutions and Regional Repercussions” with Professor Ryme Seferdjeli of the University’s Department of History acting as moderator, will be presented by the Department of History. Members of the panel will include Walid El Khachab, expert in Arab world studies at the University of Ottawa and York University; Lise Garon, Central Maghreb expert at the Université Laval; Noomane Raboudi, Arab world expert at the University of Ottawa; and May Telmissany, Egyptian-Canadian writer and expert in Arab-world studies at the University of Ottawa.
