The Carleton University-University of Ottawa Joint Chair in Women’s Studies was created in 1985 with the generous support of the Secretary of State for Canada and through the dedication of faculty members at both universities. It was launched as one of five regional chairs in women’s studies across Canada and is the only bilingual chair. Since its inception, it has had an important impact in academe, influencing the development of social norms and government policy.

The focus of the Carleton-uOttawa Joint Chair has evolved over the past 25 years. In its early years, research focused on the development of new interdisciplinary areas of interest and expertise in women’s studies. The Chair is positioned to meet new challenges and will shape public debate to ensure Canada assumes a leadership role in making progress on women’s issues.

The Joint Chair has become a prime example of the power of nationally and internationally recognized collaborative and interdisciplinary work. Countless distinguished women from across Canada and from all ranks of academe, politics and business have been, and continue to be, associated with the Joint Chair in Women’s Studies.
