University team supports prostate cancer treatment through Do It For Dad! Family Run and Walk
OTTAWA, June 24, 2011 — Funds raised by the University of Ottawa team during the 13th edition of the Do It For Dad! Family Run and Walk, which took place June 19, will go to help the Ottawa Hospital purchase leading edge equipment for prostate cancer treatment.
The team, made up mostly of members of the University community, raised more than $10,000 to equip the Ottawa Hospital’s cancer program with a da Vinci Robotics Surgery System. This system will be both a boon for prostate cancer patients and an invaluable tool for our medical residents and nursing students.
Two members of the Common Law Section of the Faculty of Law won a draw among all University participants and the generous donors who raised the funds for a month of free parking on the University’s main campus.
According to the latest reports from Cancer Care Ontario, prostate and colorectal cancer are the leading causes of cancer deaths in the province, and these cancers make no age distinction.
Every year, the Alterna Do It For Dad! Family Run and Walk brings out more than 1,700 participants to raise awareness and funds in the fight against men’s cancers. For more information on the 13th edition, see the Ottawa Regional Cancer Foundation’s blog.
