Pan-Canadian Health Human Resources Network awarded funds for innovative virtual infrastructure

OTTAWA, July 11, 2011  —  The Pan Canadian Health Human Resources Network (CHHRN), located at the University of Ottawa, has been awarded funding totalling $600,000 for the creation of a virtual infrastructure enabling participants to share health human resources (HHR) knowledge, innovation and promising practices. The CHHRN is one of only two networks funded under the CIHR Knowledge Translation Network Catalyst grant competition.

The following mechanisms will enable increased sharing of health human resources (HHR) assets:

  •  A network of regional and thematically-linked HHR researchers, knowledge users and clinical, policy and program decision-makers across Canada
  • Regional hubs at uOttawa, Dalhousie University and UBC building upon the Ontario HHR Research Network, the WHO/PAHO Collaborating Centre on Health Workforce Planning and Research, and the Centre for Health Services and Policy Research
  • A web-based portal to link regional and thematic networks
  • A clearinghouse of Canadian and international research, knowledge and promising practices

Reviewers of the proposal noted that it “addresses a significant need. The applicants’ clear plans and strong partnerships with stakeholders will ensure that the aims of the network are realized.”

The network is co-led by professors Ivy Lynn Bourgeault of the Interdisciplinary School of Health Sciences at the Faculty of Health Sciences, University of Ottawa, Morris Barer of the Centre for Health Services and Policy Research at the University of British Columbia (UBC) and Gail Tomblin Murphy of the WHO/PAHO Centre on Health Workforce Planning and Research at Dalhousie University.
