Leading-edge scientists at uOttawa and OHRI receive $8.1M boost for high impact research

OTTAWA, July 20, 2011  —  The Ministry of Research and Innovation announced today a total of $8.1 million dollars in funding to support promising research projects carried out by professors and students at the University of Ottawa and the Ottawa Hospital Research Institute.

The funding includes $2.8 million from the Ministry’s Ontario Research Fund–Research Infrastructure Program for nine research projects that will have a major impact on areas such as health and medicine, education and clean technologies. This significant funding will enable researchers to acquire state-of the art equipment that will ensure their projects’ competitive edge and heighten their potential to excel.

In addition, two affiliated researchers with the Ottawa Hospital Research Institute (OHRI) will be awarded a total of $4.8 million as part of the Ontario Research Fund – Research Excellence competition in support of research in advanced regenerative medicine and patient safety.

Finally, four promising University of Ottawa researchers will each receive up to $140,000 as part of the Early Researcher Awards program, which helps prominent young researchers recruit students, research fellows, technicians and assistants to build outstanding research teams.

“Today’s announcement from the Ontario government confirms once again that the University of Ottawa is one of Canada’s top research intensive universities,” said university president Allan Rock. “It is home to many brilliant researchers, who make invaluable contributions here and abroad. This funding will enable these exceptional people to pursue their work in cutting-edge facilities for the benefit of all Canadians, as well as help foster the next generation of leaders.”

OHRI, an affiliated research institute of the University of Ottawa boasting more than 1,500 scientists, clinicians, graduate students, postdoctoral fellows and support staff, is one of the largest and most prestigious hospital-based research centres in Canada.

The University of Ottawa is committed to research excellence and encourages an interdisciplinary approach to knowledge creation, which attracts the best academic talent from across Canada and around the world.
