Three eminent University of Ottawa researchers elected Fellows by the Royal Society of Canada

OTTAWA, September 8, 2011  —  The University of Ottawa is proud to announce that three of its professors, Michael Behiels, Keiko Hattori and France Martineau, have been elected as Fellows in the Royal Society of Canada (RSC),the highest academic accolade available to scientists and scholars in Canada.

Over the past 30 years, Professor Michael Behiels of the Department of History has taught, researched and published in three interconnected areas: political, ideological and constitutional developments in Quebec since 1940 and how these have transformed federal-provincial relations. His multidisciplinary research on federal-provincial relations, constitutional renewal and human rights is used extensively.

An internationally recognized researcher and two-time winner of the Major Collaborative Research Initiatives, the most prestigious SSHRC grant, Professor France Martineau of the Département de français has laid the foundations for the sociolinguistic history of French peoples in North America in contact situations.

Professor Keiko Hattori, of the Department of Earth Sciences, is a leading geochemist who has made seminal contributions to our understanding of the evolution of Earth's atmosphere and mantle, the formation of arc volcanoes and the generation of metal-fertile volcanic arcs. She has applied this fundamental knowledge to reveal the origins and locations of mineral deposits.

The primary objective of the RSC is to promote learning and research in the arts and sciences. The RSC consists of nearly 2000 Fellows, men and women who are selected by their peers for outstanding contributions to the natural and social sciences, in the arts and in the humanities.

The University of Ottawa is committed to research excellence and encourages an interdisciplinary approach to knowledge creation, which attracts the best academic talent from across Canada and around the world.
