New medical students honour Aboriginal traditions

OTTAWA, September 14, 2011  —  The University of Ottawa Faculty of Medicine’s fifth annual Aboriginal Celebration will take place on Victoria Island, traditional territory of the Algonquin people.

First-year medical students will kick off the academic year by participating in the Aboriginal Celebration, a full-day event designed to promote awareness and understanding of the health issues that affect the well-being of First Nations, Inuit and Métis communities.

Students will have the opportunity to acquaint themselves with the cultural diversity and richness of an authentic Aboriginal experience on historic Victoria Island. This venue provides an idyllic setting for participants to enjoy traditional food, First Nations dances, drumming, Inuit throat singing and Métis fiddling and jigging.

“Our future physicians will learn about the health issues facing Aboriginal populations in Canada and how traditional healing and cultural activities can help improve their health and well-being,” said Dr. Kitty, director of the Aboriginal program. “Students learn about the historical and social contexts of urban, rural and remote Aboriginal populations which contribute to health disparities of our peoples.”

“Traditional spirituality and gatherings are an integral part of Aboriginal culture and identity, and therefore of our healing journey,” adds Dr. Kitty. “I am thrilled to share this with our students.”

Dr. Jacques Bradwejn, dean of the Faculty of Medicine and Dr. Darlene Kitty, director of the Aboriginal Program at the University of Ottawa, will host the Aboriginal Celebration, which includes the presence of First Nations, Inuit and Métis elders. Chief Gilbert Whiteduck of the Kitigan Zibi Anishinabeg, President Gary Lipinski from Métis Nation of Ontario, President David Serkoak of Tungasuvvingat Inuit and the Ottawa Hospital’s Dr. Jeffrey Turnbull, advocate for the homeless, will be guest speakers at the event.
