OTTAWA, October 3, 2011  —  The University of Ottawa presented an honorary doctorate to Professor Jacques Samarut in recognition of his commitment to scientific research and discovery, to excellence in teaching and to the dissemination of scientific knowledge around the world, at the inaugural session of the 24e Entretiens du Centre Jacques Cartier on Sunday, October 2, in Montreal.

An eminent professor and research scientist in the field of cellular and molecular biology, Jacques Samarut has garnered an international reputation for his work on oncogenic retroviruses and on the mechanisms of hormone receptor action in embryonic development and cancer.

Appointed in 2010 to the directorship of the new École normale supérieure de Lyon, Professor Samarut is keenly aware of the importance of transdisciplinary and interdisciplinary research. In 2000, he founded the Rhône-Alpes Génopôle genomics research centre and, in 2007, the Institut de génomique fonctionnelle de Lyon. He has sat on a number of national and international evaluation committees, including that of the Roslin Institute in Edinburgh.

In 1990, Professor Samarut won the Rosen Prize for oncology, awarded by the Fondation pour la recherche médicale. He was also named Chevalier de l’Ordre national du mérite (Knight of the National Order of Merit) in 2004 and Chevalier de la Légion d’honneur (Knight of the Legion of Honour) in 2008.
